Are you looking for the perfect Summer themed cake? This year in the UK we have had an amazing summer with the sun shining most days (which is rare for a UK summer, I mean we are known for our rain!), so I really wanted to create a summer themed cake for this weeks video tutorial. This is a cake a I have been so excited to make, so for this weeks video I am going to show you step by step how I made this bucket and spade cake.

I absolutely loved how this cake turned out, and I really hope you like it too. The bucket is made from 3 layers of 6 inch vanilla sponge cake, carved into the bucket shape with the tapered edges. It was then filled with milk chocolate ganache to give it more stability than buttercream and coloured in this beautiful jade colour icing / fondant from Renshaw.
Watch how to create a bucket and spade cake
Below you can watch step by step how to carve the bucket out of cake and then how to cover it in ganache and fondant to bring it to life. I then show you how to create and secure the spade and add the sand and shells as a finishing touch.
Creating the spade
What bucket is complete without a spade. The spade is made from gumpaste as this allowed it to set a little firmer than fondant on its own. I used a template to cuy out the pieces and secured them on a wooden dowel. This allowed the spade to keep it’s shape but also gave me a way to secure it to the cake. You can download the template for the spade below.

Creating realistic edible sand
Creating realistic sand is so important to make this cake seem believable. The best thing I’ve found to use for the sand is Digestive biscuits, crushed up into fine pieces.
To crush the biscuits I place them in an sandwich bag and use a rolling pin to roll over the top. These can then be spooned onto the cake, sticking them onto buttercream, coloured in a similar colour.

These really are the perfect shade and texture to look like the bucket was placed on real sand at the beach.
To make it more believable it was then finished off with some the edible fondant shells. The shells are one of my favourite parts of this cake. I used 4 different colours of icing, a white, a light ivory, a dark ivory and a grey mixed together to give a marbled effect. Using a silicone mould I was then able to create the perfect shell shapes. I think these looked so perfect sticking out of the sand!

Throughout the video I show you step by step every stage of the cake, so be sure to check out the video tutorial if you would like to make your own bucket and spade cake. The video is also packed with lots of cake decorating tips and techniques to help you with carved, novelty cakes. I really hope you enjoy this video tutorial and find it useful.
